With the addition of the second turbine-generator unit, Wayang Windu is the largest geothermal power plant in Indonesia. With a total production capacity of 227 MW, this project displaces up to 800,000 tons of CO2 emissions every year. A third unit of 127 MW is being planned and expected to be on stream in mid-2013.
Star Energy, the owner of the plant, chose Victaulic Style 77 flexible couplings and grooved end fittings to join 6 – 12" galvanized piping on the drilling water system, which connects the separators to the injection wells. Victaulic couplings provide fast, easy installation on-site. In addition, the inherent flexibility of the Victaulic Style 77 flexible coupling allows for piping deflection on uneven ground, and accommodates thermal expansion and contraction of the piping system. While welding galvanized pipe damages the protective coating and releases harmful fumes during the welding process, Victaulic mechanical grooved joints are cold formed, maintaining the galvanized finish on the piping and ensuring erosion resistance throughout the system.
